ChromoGenics

Shaping The Future of Dynamic Glass

ChromoGenics is the European leader in electrochromic solar control, transforming decades of Swedish materials science into tomorrow’s green PropTech solutions.

A Nordic Innovation

Long dark winters and endless summer days. In the North, architecture is shaped by the sun’s movement. Light dictates how we live, and how we build. At ChromoGenics, we have turned this relationship into our greatest innovation.

Born from decades of advanced material science in Uppsala, Sweden, our technology was created to solve a persistent architectural challenge: how to maximise natural daylight without compromising energy efficiency or indoor well-being.

Today, ChromoGenics operates one of Europe’s largest industrial sputtering facilities dedicated to electrochromic film. As the continent’s only manufacturer with complete in-house production, we manage the entire value chain, from initial R&D to precision manufacturing.

This local European footprint guarantees strict quality control, shorter lead times, and verified, science-backed sustainability for modern architecture.

The future is dynamic.

Our Uppsala Facility

Research, development, and industrial production meet under one roof at the Uppsala HQ. Following a major strategic investment, the advanced production plant became fully operational in 2021. The factory is unique in its scale, housing one of Europe’s largest and most advanced sputtering lines.

At the heart of the manufacturing is a high-tech roll-to-roll sputtering process, where a flexible film is coated with a nano-thin electrochromic material. This precision technique forms the basis of several core patents.

Operating a dedicated, 100% green electricity-powered facility in Sweden maximises sustainability at every stage by reducing transport requirements, shortening lead times, and maintaining uncompromising quality control.

Running on several shifts, the facility’s high capacity scales to produce and deliver electrochromic foil to a demanding global market.

From Academic Research
to Market Leader

The technology is deeply rooted in academic excellence and Swedish innovation. Research began in the early 1980s at the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University – one of Europe’s leading research centres in materials science. Here, Professor Claes-Göran Granqvist pioneered groundbreaking research into electrochromic materials capable of dynamically altering their properties in response to light and heat.

A decade later, physics student Greger Gregard expanded on this research as part of his master’s thesis under Granqvist’s guidance. This breakthrough laid the foundation for the official founding of ChromoGenics in 2003, backed by a robust patent portfolio.

Supported by key institutions such as the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten), ChromoGenics successfully transitioned this patented basic research from the laboratory to the commercial market. Today, the dynamic foil is integrated into architectural glass solutions worldwide – delivering optimal solar control with minimal environmental impact across production, transport, and operation.
